Mariya Garnet

I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), Expressive Arts Therapist, mother, artist, and immigrant, with over 17 years in mental health. I spent 9 years living in the Peruvian Amazon, where I built a healing retreat and apprenticed with traditional healers as an indigenously trained psychedelic facilitator. That time is part of how I work now, even in an online therapy room in Ontario.

I work with complex trauma, childhood emotional neglect, dissociation, and emotional numbness. Most of the people I see are thoughtful and self-aware, and have usually tried other things before they get to me. They understand their patterns. They just can’t seem to get out from under them. That’s where somatic and expressive work can reach something that talking alone often doesn’t.

In sessions I draw on expressive arts, somatic awareness, and integrative healing practices. We might talk, draw, move, or stay with something that doesn’t have words yet. I don’t push toward resolution. Some of what we’re working with took years to form and needs room to move at its own pace.

Themes that come up often: belonging, disconnection, self-trust, finding your own voice, the parts of yourself that went quiet to keep the peace. As an immigrant who has moved between very different worlds, I have some sense of what it means to carry more than one reality and not quite fit in either.
