Understanding NARM Somatically
Not all trauma looks like a single event. Some of the deepest wounds are relational, formed early in life when our needs for connection, safety, attunement, or love went chronically unmet. These experiences shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world. They live not just in our minds but in our nervous systems, our bodies, and our sense of who we are.
The NeuroAffective Relational Model, or NARM, was developed by Dr. Laurence Heller specifically to address this kind of healing. It works at the intersection of the body and the psyche, not to relive the past, but to gently understand what it is still doing in the present.
"No matter how withdrawn and isolating we have become or how serious the trauma we have experienced, on the deepest level, just as a plant spontaneously moves towards the sun, there is in each of us an impulse moving toward connection."
Dr. Laurence Heller, Healing Developmental Trauma
SOULFUL THERAPY
What is NARM Therapy?
NARM is a somatic, depth-oriented approach to healing complex and developmental trauma. It recognizes that when core childhood needs go unmet, for connection, attunement, trust, autonomy, and love, we adapt. We learn to disconnect from parts of ourselves to survive. Those adaptations were intelligent. They kept us safe. And over time, they can become the very patterns that keep us feeling stuck, disconnected, or not quite like ourselves.
NARM doesn’t ask you to go back and relive what happened. Instead, it works with what is happening right now, in your body, your nervous system, and your relationship with yourself, to understand and gently shift the patterns formed long ago.
This is not about fixing what is broken. It is about coming home to what was always there.
If you are experiencing:
- A persistent sense that something is wrong with you, even when your life looks okay on the outside
- Recurring patterns in relationships that you can't seem to change no matter how hard you try
- Disconnection from your body, your emotions, or your sense of self
- Chronic anxiety, depression, or exhaustion without a clear cause
- Shame that feels older and deeper than anything you can point to
- Growing up in a home that was emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, or overwhelming, even if nothing overtly traumatic happened
- A feeling that previous therapy helped, but something still feels missingThe impact of a medical diagnosis, surgery, or procedure that left emotional residue
- Difficulty trusting yourself or others
- A longing to feel more alive, more present, more like yourself
Soulful Therapy can help you feel understood, grounded, and more connected to who you truly are.
SOULFUL THERAPY
How Can NARM Therapy Help?
Nervous System Regulation
Learn to recognize and work with the survival patterns your nervous system learned long ago, developing greater capacity for steadiness and presence.
Identity & Self-Connection
Explore the parts of yourself that went underground, and begin to reconnect with a deeper, more authentic sense of who you are.
Relational Healing
Understand how your early relational experiences shaped the patterns you carry in your relationships today, and begin to shift them from the inside out.
Shame & Core Beliefs
Gently meet the beliefs formed in childhood, that you are too much, not enough, unlovable, or fundamentally flawed, with curiosity rather than judgment.
Body-Based Healing
Work with what the body is holding, not just what the mind remembers. Healing at the nervous system level creates change that lasts.
Moving Beyond Survival
Begin to live from a place of genuine choice rather than automatic adaptation, more connected, more present, more free.
We work at a pace that honours your system and your history. There is no rushing this work. There is only showing up, with curiosity and care.
